In a shocking instance of administrative insensitivity, over 150 families were rendered homeless after civic and railway authorities jointly demolished houses near the Kadugondanahalli (KG Halli) Railway Gate in north Bengaluru on October 31. The large-scale eviction drive, reportedly carried out without due legal notice, left hundreds\u2014including children and the elderly\u2014sleeping on the roadside beside railway tracks.<\/p>\n

A Pre-Dawn Operation Turns Violent<\/h3>\n

According to residents, the demolition began around 8 a.m. when nearly 400 police, Railway Protection Force (RPF), and BBMP officials<\/strong> arrived with bulldozers. \u201cThey had come the previous evening and assured us four days\u2019 time to vacate. But by next morning, they brought JCBs and started demolishing while people were still inside,\u201d said Meena, a resident who lost her home.<\/p>\n

Witnesses allege that police forcibly evicted people, used lathis to disperse protesting residents<\/strong>, and threw out personal belongings. \u201cThey didn\u2019t even allow us to take our utensils or clothes. Men, women, and even children were beaten,\u201d claimed another resident.<\/p>\n

At least six to seven people were injured<\/strong> and treated at the KG Halli Community Health Centre. Among them was 22-year-old Sneha, who fainted during the chaos after fasting for two days. \u201cI saw my house crushed before my eyes,\u201d she recounted tearfully.<\/p>\n

Detention and Intimidation<\/h3>\n

Two men\u2014Wilson (30)<\/strong> and Palani (31)<\/strong>\u2014were detained at the Govindpura Police Station. Wilson alleged that police threatened to register false cases against them. \u201cThey made us sign a paper before letting us go,\u201d he said. Residents expressed fear of further harassment if they continued to protest.<\/p>\n

Decades-Old Settlements Erased<\/h3>\n

The affected families belong predominantly to Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities<\/strong> and have lived in the area for four to five generations. Many are daily-wage labourers, domestic workers, or garment factory employees.<\/p>\n

Residents pointed out that some homes were sanctioned by the BBMP in 2017<\/strong>, with work orders and documents to prove their legitimacy. Others said that a year ago, officials collected their signatures promising \u201ccompensation\u201d \u2014 though no follow-up was made. \u201cWe trusted the government when they gave us land and funds. Now they say it belongs to the Railways,\u201d lamented Saroja, a domestic worker.<\/p>\n

A Humanitarian Crisis Born of Mismanagement<\/h3>\n

The demolition has exposed a glaring lack of coordination between government departments<\/strong>. While the Slum Board<\/strong> had reportedly allocated these sites and the BBMP provided up to \u20b94 lakh per family<\/strong> for construction, the Railway Department<\/strong> has now claimed ownership of the land.<\/p>\n

The conflicting claims have created a bureaucratic disaster<\/strong> with devastating consequences for around 600 individuals<\/strong>. With no rehabilitation plan, residents spent nights on open pavements, without access to sanitation or drinking water.<\/p>\n

Civic activists condemned the action as \u201cinhuman and illegal\u201d<\/strong>, urging the government to hold the officials accountable. \u201cNo family should be made homeless overnight in a democratic state. The law mandates prior notice, consultation, and rehabilitation,\u201d said a volunteer assisting the victims.<\/p>\n

Calls for Accountability and Relief<\/h3>\n

Despite the seriousness of the incident, there has been minimal media coverage or official acknowledgment<\/strong>. Rights groups have demanded that the Karnataka government intervene<\/strong> and provide immediate shelter, compensation, and a clear resolution on land ownership.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not just a demolition\u2014it\u2019s an erasure of dignity,\u201d said a community leader. \u201cWe built our homes on land the government gave us. How can they now call us encroachers?\u201d<\/p>\n

The tragedy at Kadugondanahalli stands as a grim reminder of administrative negligence and policy failure<\/strong>, where the poor continue to pay the price for the state\u2019s own contradictions.<\/p>\n
