Malkhede, and submitted a formal letter urging the immediate withdrawal of armed forces deployed in Karadikallu Hattur Kollehaadi, inside the Nagarahole Tiger Reserve. The appeal was also addressed to Meenakshi Negi, PCCF (Head of Forest Forces).<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"919\" data-end=\"922\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"924\" data-end=\"979\">Tension in Nagarahole: Paramilitary Forces Deployed<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"1407\">The urgent plea comes amid escalating tension in Karadikallu since 5 May, where over 120 personnel from the Forest Department, State Police, and Special Tiger Protection Force (STPF) have been deployed. Community leaders say the presence of these forces is a deliberate intimidation tactic against the 52 Jenu Kuruba families who returned earlier this month to reclaim the village they were evicted from over four decades ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1409\" data-end=\"1679\">&#8220;The Jenu Kuruba, Betta Kuruba, Yerava, and Paniya Adivasi peoples have lived in the Nagarahole forests for generations\u2014long before the Forest Department even existed,&#8221; asserted the Nagarahole Adivasi Jammapale Hakku Sthapana Samiti (NAJHSS), a local tribal rights body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1681\" data-end=\"1906\">According to community statements, troops have dismantled shelters, sacred spaces, and temporary facilities for menstruating women\u2014actions the collective condemns as violations of both human dignity and constitutional rights.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"1908\" data-end=\"1911\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1913\" data-end=\"1965\">Forest Rights Claims Ignored, Say Tribal Leaders<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1967\" data-end=\"2159\">Contrary to claims by forest authorities that the community\u2019s FRA applications were rejected, Jenu Kuruba leaders allege that the Forest Department itself has failed to follow legal protocols.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2161\" data-end=\"2502\">\u201cOur FRA claims were filed in 2021 with full documentation and joint verification by the Panchayat, Revenue, Tribal Welfare, and Forest Departments. Not only have they not responded within the mandated three months, but they are also now trying to criminalize our return,\u201d said JA Shivu, President of the Karadikallu Forest Rights Committee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2504\" data-end=\"2708\">The community says they have made multiple attempts to engage with authorities. Despite being called for a meeting on 7 May, representatives were made to wait the entire day without any official response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2710\" data-end=\"2845\">\u201cWe are ready for dialogue. We met our local MLA and spoke with him openly. Why won\u2019t the Forest Department meet us?\u201d Shivu questioned.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2847\" data-end=\"2850\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2852\" data-end=\"2905\">Authorities Deny Military Presence, Deflect Blame<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2907\" data-end=\"3128\">In the meeting with the solidarity group, PCCF (Wildlife) Subhash Malkhede denied the presence of paramilitary forces\u2014despite photographs and widespread media coverage that clearly show heavily armed troops on the ground.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3130\" data-end=\"3307\">He further claimed delays in processing FRA claims were due to the absence of Gram Panchayat elections over the past eight years. The community has strongly rebutted this claim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3309\" data-end=\"3561\">\u201cThis is a deliberate misdirection,\u201d said Shivu. \u201cOur Gram Sabha has been active since 2009, and we have a functioning Forest Rights Committee. The Forest Rights Act does not require panchayat elections\u2014it requires recognition of our ancestral rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"3563\" data-end=\"3566\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"3568\" data-end=\"3617\">Demands from Civil Society: End the Injustice<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3619\" data-end=\"3693\">In their submission, the solidarity collective laid out four core demands:<\/p>\n<ol data-start=\"3695\" data-end=\"4157\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3695\" data-end=\"3780\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3698\" data-end=\"3780\"><strong data-start=\"3698\" data-end=\"3722\">Immediate withdrawal<\/strong> of all armed forces from Karadikallu to end intimidation.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3781\" data-end=\"3914\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3784\" data-end=\"3914\"><strong data-start=\"3784\" data-end=\"3817\">Initiation of direct dialogue<\/strong> with the NAJHSS and Karadikallu Forest Rights Committee to address the situation democratically.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3915\" data-end=\"3981\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3918\" data-end=\"3981\"><strong data-start=\"3918\" data-end=\"3945\">Unhindered media access<\/strong> to the area to ensure transparency.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"3982\" data-end=\"4157\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3985\" data-end=\"4157\"><strong data-start=\"3985\" data-end=\"4013\">Recognition and approval<\/strong> of all pending IFR (Individual Forest Rights), CFR (Community Forest Rights), and CFRR (Community Forest Resource Rights) claims filed in 2021.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"4159\" data-end=\"4162\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"4164\" data-end=\"4215\">A Growing Movement of Resistance and Solidarity<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4217\" data-end=\"4586\">The solidarity group includes the Karnataka chapter of the All India Lawyers Association for Justice, academic representatives from the University of Mysore and NIAS, youth-led campaigns like Fridays for Future and the All India Students Association, and national alliances such as the National Alliance of People\u2019s Movements and the National Council for Women Leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4588\" data-end=\"4761\">Noted individuals endorsing the appeal include senior activist <strong data-start=\"4651\" data-end=\"4672\">Meera Sanghamitra<\/strong>, environmental writer <strong data-start=\"4695\" data-end=\"4709\">Yuvan Aves<\/strong>, and legal scholar <strong data-start=\"4729\" data-end=\"4746\">Abhayraj Naik<\/strong>, among others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4763\" data-end=\"4970\">Their message is clear: forced evictions under the pretext of conservation are unjust, illegal, and deeply harmful to the Indigenous communities who have lived in and protected these forests for generations.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"4972\" data-end=\"4975\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"4977\" data-end=\"5001\">A Call to Conscience<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5003\" data-end=\"5319\">As the Forest Department continues to deny wrongdoing and downplay the use of force, the voices of the Jenu Kuruba and their supporters are growing louder.
